Glutton for Punishment?!?

After a wonderful six days at various Calgary Stampede events, it has to be said. There is a new Guiness Book of World Records Holder in town. Bob Blumer beat the old record of 555 pancakes flipped and cooked in an hour with a last minute pour at Rope Square at the Calgary Stampede.

Beating the record by 4 pancakes was an amazing thing to witness. The host of the Food Networks 'Glutton for Punishment' TV Show, Bob took 5 days to learn how to properly flip pancakes, perfected the pancake batter and learned the finer points of pancakes to beat the world record.

And I was there. How cool is that? I never thought I would witness the breaking of a guiness record, but now I can say I have done it.

While this record was broken, there are rumors that the Stampede may be after another record attempt next year - the most pancakes eaten in an hour! (I wonder how many that would be?)

Who knows what will happen next year, but this year, the Stampede was the place to be.

Hey, I'm not trying to tout my own horn here, but heck, what can a person say when they find something like this on the internet? What are they saying you would ask? Nothing bad. All in all, it seems that someone feels I am a marketing guru. We all think that what we do has merit, but something like this just makes the long days worthwhile! And while I'm no longer with The BEACH Advanced Audio, I look back and am extremely happy with what we were able to accomplish while I was there. Thanks guys, and happy trails!

New Levels of Stupidity

Well I didn't think it would ever come to this, but by jove, it has. There are actually websites that are dedicated to 'reporting' what the stupid people have said. Anyone can post what they have 'overheard'. Whether it was 'overheard on the beach' or 'overheard in new york' you can post it up there for all the world to see.

Are we really getting that stupid that people all over the world have enough 'stupid' comments to post on a website, and there are enough people that will visit it on a consistent basis to keep them going? I thought it was a gag, but they keep going and going.

A Trip To The Beach

I gotta admit, it's been an interesting week to see go by. I said goodbye to a few friends at my last job, and am actually enjoying some time off. After working 60-100 hours a week for the past 16 months, it's nice to relax and watch the world go by.

There were some great times and some great memories, like watching radio hosts stumble off of stages, young up and coming bands come through and give their audiences the thrill of being up close and personal, and all the great clients that I had the opportunity to deal with.

But now that it's over, I can look ahead and smile. While working is never really a trip to the Beach, having some time off in the wonderful sun shine is.

And I have to admit that in my explorations to the world wide web as of late, I came across a quote that is worth remembering.

This is what Minister Joe Wright said when asked to open up the new session of the Kansas Senate. Everyone was expecting the usual generalities, but they got something completely different.

Now I am not one for any religious propaganda whatsoever, but a lot of what is mentioned here is very truthful, and hits extremely close to home. What do you think?

Obituary of the Late Mr. Common Sense

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: knowing when to come in out of the rain; why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies: (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies: (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Tylenol, sun lotion or a band-aid to a student; but could not inform then when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband and criminals received better treatment than the homeless.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a women failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was receded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason. He is survived by his 3 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights, Someone Else Is To Blame, and I'm A Victim.

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing...

He will be missed...

Complications

It's funny how life takes things and makes you re-evaluate everything that you have already determined to be truthful.

One of my girlfriends is getting married. Another is going in to get tested for cancer. And all of a sudden, everything that seemed that important isn't.

Who knows what the future will hold, I only know that you better enjoy yourself 'cause it's a rocky ride, and you may not be on the carousel for that much longer before you realize it's now turned into a rollercoaster.

Living in the Richest province

Well, it's about bloody time. Alberta - the richest province in Canada has finally decided that years after Ralph Klein brought us up to date and got us out of the red and into the green financially as in many other ways, we have finally gotten something right.

As of January 1, 2009, Health care will be free for one and all. Geez, and just think about it...Cuba has had this for years already.

Scary isn't it?

How can we live in a wealthy nation with 26% of the population living below the poverty line, and no access to health care without paying a fee that means that some people won't eat.

Freaking crazy.

Working Experiences

It's kinda funny that no one really likes where they work. And no one really tries to do anything about it.

The majority of people spend more time with people they work with than people that they actually love. Our work lives have overcome our actual lives, and we spend more time trying to make people who are completely and utterly insignificant like us.

Anyone who has my feelings on work and such, usually don't tell their workmates everything about their personal lives, because work is competition. If you aren't on top of the heap, than you are on your way to the bottom, and I can guarantee that there are always people waiting to see you fall.

In one of my latest positions working for other people (which is why I absolutely despise doing it) I had a coup pulled on me. And it was my fault. I didn't see it coming, and really I didn't care. I was past the point of trying to squeeze water from the stone. The thing that bugs me though, is that one of my supervisors let it happen. There was no support, and none of the BS that had been spoken between us meant a thing when someone is more concerned with taking the path with least resistance.

My opinion? Don't bother. The least resistance will only end with a head (most likely yours) on a pole at the end of the battle.

Very strange and profound. It's about an author, trying to get people to buy her book, who devotes her whole website to writing about it on the top of her refridgerator and then moves on to her stove. Very random, yet amusing. Perhaps you will enjoy it as well?

Gold What??

I have to admit that the coolest thing I have heard in awhile is a little band called Goldfrapp. They are completely and utterly british and are massive over there, and are completely unique to Canada really. They are finally starting to get some play in redneck hicksville Calgary on an alternative radio station called X92.9FM. Which although people were really hard on it to begin with, the new station is gaining in popularity and garnering some respect in the community - if only the alternative indie types at the moment.

X92.9FM is a good little station although I wonder how long it will last. Stations tend to get thrown to the wolves around here, so I will be interested to see how long X can last.

But check out this band as they are well worth it. And even possibly X92.9FM.

A new feeling.

Today, a new feeling struck me. Nothing like the love struck butterflies, or the feeling of leaving a stomach behind when on a roller coaster. It wasn't the feeling of a soft ocean breeze on your face or the warm sand in between your toes.

It was something less amazing, and more important. It was an 'aha' moment. Not the first I had, but one that definitely will shape the next move in my life.

The feeling that I was privy to today was nothing more than the feeling of wind brushing my cheek as I closed one door behind me, and felt another window open.

Today, I heard the words from a boss that told me what I needed to hear, although possibly not what I wanted. Sometimes, the best things to hear are the things we don't want to hear.

What was said and what door closed? Does it really matter?

A New Beginning

Well, I have returned to where it all began here in Calgary, Canada. I thought that my feet would never stay here over an extended period of time, although I have been stationary for far too long to avoid saying the inevitable. I am here for at least a little longer, and I can not escape that. So I have decided to find the good things that reside here.

The coffee isn't great, although it is getting better. I must admit that I found at least two places that don't burn the milk! (And that isn't even a Starbucks!!)

And the food is definitely getting better....but still has a long way to go.

More discoveries to be made I am sure!

Little Known Facts

I never would have guessed that it would have happened here in Calgary, in the place where I grew up. I know that we had our first drive by shooting about ten years ago, and that drugs have been a part of life for a long time now, but are we really in the throwes of a STD epidemic?

Maybe we wouldn't be in so much trouble if they took the time to tell us the following somewhat important information.

Here in Calgary:
- they provide free drug testing.
- they don't test you for AIDS unless you specifically ask for it. (Checking one box instead of two is the subtle diffence.)
- they can not test for herpes. (Countless scores of people can be walking around with Herpes and they don't even know it. And there is no way to tell.)
- you can get genitel herpes from kissing someone who has herpes.

So as Calgarians laugh at the 'epidemic' that threatens our very city, I want to ask why the city and the governments are not telling us the truth. Why aren't they telling us that they can't test for some things and that they refuse to test for others?

While some people scream about being misled - others are wondering whether it's worth trying to save the masses. What do you think??

Who Killed the Electric Car??

Who killed the electric car. It might not come to the forefront of everyone's mind as a question that really needs to be answered. But by the same token, why aren't more of us asking this question? Maybe because we don't have the information that we need.

It's hard to believe that the electric car has been around as long as the combustion engine, and while it runs almost silently, and completely cleanly, it has never become the favortie. Maybe that is because there are still 1 trillion barrels of crude oil left to be drilled for. At $100 a barrel, who would blame the oil and gas companies for not wanting to lose their share of a 100 trillion dollar market? Why allow a new competing product to come on the market when you can just shred all your prototypes that you have been leasing?

That's right. GM squashed their perfectly fine, completely functional electric cars because they posed a threat to their profit margins. They couldn't make money in the initial six months of selling this car to a waiting list of people (that they still claim doesn't exist), so they destroyed all the evidence that it ever existed. It sent all of them to it's arizona headquarters and had them destroyed. But that's one better than Toyota who had theirs shredded. Completely shredded beyond recognition. After claiming that these cars were still on the roads and that supervisors were driving them, they were discovered demolished in a deserted parking lot.

Maybe the Bush administration should be held accountable though. Bush who thinks that we should decrease our dependence on foreign imports of oil thinks instead that we should destroy the Alaskan wildlife park to drill out enough oil to last the US a year. If he was focusing on improving the milage of the cars, he would save that much every year over the next 15 years. But why stop the gas guzzling addiction that we have discovered??

All in all, I found the film "Who Killed the Electric Car" to be an amazing and thought provoking documentry that really leaves you thinking about who is to blame for the lack of responsibility that we all have grown accustomed to. Who is to blame for our global warming issues. Who is to blame for our predicament? You tell me...

Calgary Transit and the Impending Strike

I find it amusing that as the city of Calgary expands at an astronomical rate, the city has just agreed to let over 60,000 units in the inner city. The Stampede grounds are being redeveloped and apartment complexes, excuse me, condo complexes are springing up faster than you can problems. Though this will provide a more economically sound solution to a problem that has been building up for years, it still brings us to the major problem that is crippling the growth rate of this wonderful city.

The Calgary transit system has always lacked the ability to transport the number of people that it was one day going to have to transport, but now, we have far surpassed the capacity of this antiquated system. Over 4 million people use our transit system in a year. That's four times the population of our population. But while other major centers have the infastructure in both road structure as well as the transit system, we lack both. While our "number one" highway moves at a snails pace throughout the city due to lack of planning, our new ring road that was started ten years ago has turned into a dead end and our massive throughfare is a parking lot in rush hour, our transit workers are going to strike.

That's right. Our less than substantial transit system is going on strike due to the city increasing bus sizes and refusing to allow drivers to transfer positions while maintaining their superiority. Oh, but the real issue?? The city is offering 12% raise over 36 months which would make our transit workers the second highest paid in the country. The union wants 13% over 30 months. So both parties are willing parties in bringing our city to a standstill over small descrepinces. Our roads will be busier than ever due to the extra cars on the road, and people that survive on transit alone due to the skyrocketing costs of petrol and insurance will be left without a way to get to work and buy their groceries.

I would love to tell both parties to get a grip, get over it and work it out. We need our transit to keep our city going, transit workers need to make enough to survive on, and the city needs to keep our transit working and expanding.

So we all want the same things - grow up, get a pair and make some decisions to keep the city from stopping.

Precious People All The Time

I must admit that the outbreak of those "precious" people in our world has reached unthinkable levels. I just never thought that I would be stuck in a house with a pack of them. I'm not sure if you would call them a pack, or a pride (probably a better word considering that they tend to think of themselves, and nothing else) but here I am, and there they are and we seem to have reached an impasse.

The worst of the lot is K. I'll call her K for the time being anyways. See for her, the world revolves around her. If she has to sleep, the house has to sleep, but if she is in for a partying night, well then she's going to wake the whole house up on her way in the door. Mix into that lot M, who has a bit of a bad temper, although is amazing all up. Finally the oldies make the whole thing just a little more suspect. From slamming doors, to particular ways of doing things that must be adhered to or the world will fail, I'm getting an up close and personal look at how precious people become that way.

It has brought me to wonder what these precious people will do for our world as they get older and wiser. They already have bought into the PC bull that states that some words must not be tolerated because they are 'wrong' although they do not question the motives behind creating a negative sentiment to a word. They can not appreciate the word for it's historical meaning, or true meaning in some cases when it is the slang meaning that has discredited the world.

One feels that she wants to change the world. I see a girl that wants all the rich to give their money to the poor. This is a classic mistake that most people make. Seeing as every person in my household does not understand what it means to invest and make money, how can we give everyone money and expect the worlds problems to be fixed. I relate this back to an old proverb that comes from the Bible, and for those of you who know me, this is a stretch.

"Give a man a fish and feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you will feed him for a lifetime."

Maybe it's time we stop giving people anything. Some people (as I have learned from first hand experience) will never learn. And for them, handouts are the only way that they will ever survive. But others, crave to learn. Not universtity learning, but the school of hard knocks type of learning, the type of learning that will enable them to move forward in life and leave a life of hardship behind.

This young lady needs to learn to put less emphasis on her university training and more stock into real life. If she continues on her path towards 'teaching' people to give all their money away, she's going to realize that she's not going to get anywhere. But then who am I to tell her that she doesn't have to give all her money away to fix the world's problems. The more money that gets given away, the more that there is for those of us to earn.

The Worst Massacre On Record??

A person has to wonder what was on the person's mind as they chained the doors of a school building shut and proceeded to shoot everyone in their German class. When they knew that the police were on their way, he put the gun to his head and shot himself, adding yet another body to the number of dead that the world is now counting.

Oh wait, I guess we don't have to wonder. NBC decided to boost it's ratings by showing the video that a psychopath recorded wearing guns and speaking in vague terms of mass destruction and hate. Other networks followed suit, showed the video, then later said they were sorry for subjecting the viewing public to the hate messages that a killer spewed in his final moments before taking 29 lives and his own.

Does anyone wonder what shaped this young man into the killer that he became? Does anyone want to know how to stop it from happening again?

I tend to think that technology revolution allows us to connect to people the world over from the comfort of our own homes. And while we become more attached to our computers and our invisible friends, we lose a piece of our sanity that allows us to connect to people in real life. That allows us to live our lives in real time. So instead, we take offence and want others to notice us. Even if it's the with the sound of silence that populates the space where our voice should have been.

When will we learn to live in real life, and not online, while appreciating everything and everyone?

I doubt it ever will happen. What about you?

The funny thing about this wonderful "pro-life" argument that anti-abortionists use, is the fact that this urban legend about Beethoven is completely false. Beethoven was the eldest - strictly number two, but his elder sibling died in infancy which was common in those days.

It's amazing what lengths some groups of people will go to, to coerce people to believe in their viewpoint is it not?

You can taste it in the shock and roar of a first, unexpected kiss, or in the blood in your mouth that instant after an accident when you realize you’re still alive. It blows in the wind you feel on the rooftops of a really reckless night of adventure. You hear it in the magic of your favorite songs, how they lift and transport you in ways that no science or psychology could ever account for. It might be you’ve seen evidence of it scratched into bathroom walls in a code without a key, or you’ve been able to make out a pale reflection of it in the movies they make to keep us entertained. Christian Bishop Says No To Gambling. Really.

On Page 5 of the Calgary Sun today ran an article articulating the good that a ‘man of the cloth, the leader of this city’s Catholics’ Bishop Fred Henry and his battle against getting Catholic schools out of gambling fundraising. I have had a good laugh, as Bishop Henry will state that this battle is ‘all about good and evil, right over wrong.’ I must admit that I didn’t know whether Rick Bell’s article was a tongue in cheek sarcastic remark or whether he truly believed what he had written.

I have yet to believe that a church that has a sordid history of involvement in personally guiding the moral decisions of our world can be completely correct about ‘arbitrarily’ teaching us about what is morally correct. Especially when the Bishop explains that ‘putting a couple of bucks on a hockey game or buying a 50/50 ticket is not the same as making money off a casino.’

Excuse me, but would the honourable(?) Bishop Fred Henry please take time out of his busy schedule influencing people’s thoughts and explain to me how one is morally correct while the other isn’t? I would assume that winning a million bucks off of the lottery would be God’s will, while working a casino bingo to raise money for your child to go on their band trip is Satan’s will?

Does this not sound just a little hypocritical coming from the good man of the cloth?

Then the Bishop states that "all members of society are to be treated justly and not exploited. Legalised gambling is in sharp conflict with these principles."

Has the Bishop been asleep throughout the past thirty years? Buying 50/50 tickets is a legalised endeavour. And whilst he likes to blame the Government for not giving back to the community, I would like to see all Church’s, not just the good Catholics lose their tax-free status and have to declare how much the donations of the year are, and where they have been spent. Just as Fred Henry is asking our government to be able to answer for their "nickel and dime the parents while we have $7 billion surpluses" tactics, I would like to see the supposedly morally correct church justify their right as our moral high ground.

The response that I receive from the good Bishop will be posted on this blog as soon as he finds the answers from God and responds I would assume. So please, keep a weather eye out for the Lord’s response to accountability.

Should Canada kick Quebec Out?

Seeing as the Liberals have achieved the first minority government in Quebec in 125 years, I would assume that they should be applauded. My skepticism of this new government comes hand in hand with the bribery payment that Mr. Harper just gave Quebec to save his own ass. As a second no confidence vote was announced, Mr. Harper 'bought off' Quebec with over 16 million dollars of money (mostly coming from the successful provinces - BC and Alberta of course) sprinkled throughout the budget.

This brings back memories of the Bloc Quebecois party bringing around two referendums, polling residents as to whether they want to become their own separate country. Now their own country is probably pushing it a little bit. They wanted to leave their debt to the national government, wanted to use the Canadian dollar and free entry to 'Canada' whenever they decided to visit. On the other hand, they wanted all Canadians travelling to Quebec to hold valid passports and to submit to immigration and customs screening.

Now those same people that were defeated twice, not once but twice and rubbing their hands together and giggling with glee because they might be lucky enough to get another chance.

But I say that we, as residents of Canada (that want to be part of Canada) do our own referendum. I say we should vote to see whether the paying and contributing residents of this wonderful (though sometimes cold) country really want the leech like Quebec-ers as part of our country anymore.

The Canadian government needs to get a clue. Our government was a bunch of spineless wimps. We still are. I guess some things don't change. But are Canadians spineless wimps? I think the answer is a definite NO. So let's set the record straight at the upcoming referendum, and send Quebec packing!

It's funny, I read the book "The World is Flat" and I can understand how it was outdated before it was even printed. It was revised with more information and re-released, but now, books that try to capture a moment in time are outdated the moment that they are thought of. The moment that a thought crosses the threshold of our brains, it is outdated. Does that frighten many people? I fear that it doesn't.

Through myspace, I discovered a little powerpoint presentation that captures the essence of Globalization. And while many people will only see the brilliance that is acheived through our gaining knowledge and building faster computers, it is not necessarily so.

This morning I awoke to blizzard like conditions on the first day of spring. How can people claim that global warming isn't happening in certain places when we are getting blizzards every other day, only broken up by days that have temperatures in the double digit pluses. We always had blizzards in march, april and may, but it was never this unsettled.

But enough about that, take a look at this. It started falling about four hours ago and it's still going strong!

Americans Paving the Road for Illegal Immigrants

It has recently come to my attention that the US of A is currently debating a bill that would pave the road for illegal immigrants to become citizens of the US of A much easier. While I have no problems with people immigrating to different countries, it makes me wonder if that will reduce their problems? They are having problems with the health care system and the lack of support that the current population is facing, but they want to allow more people in. Instead of rewarding people who go through the proper channels and jump through all the prescribed hoops, they are going to allow people who illegally snuck into this country to become citizens?

How can they not see the irony in this predicament?

Instead of allowing more people in who have gotten in and are enjoying the 'freedoms' so to speak of a country illeagally, they should be concentrating on improving the standard of living for the people who currently reside in the US of A.

And for everyone who now seems to think that the immigration issues as well as the war in Iraq are linked because of the amount of 'foreigners' who have immigrated to the US and now are fighting in Iraq, I have one last bit of advice for you. When you immigrate somewhere, you adopt that country as your own. You can't be a third generation lebonese australian, or a fifth generation mexican american. You are an American. An Australian. Stop trying to be special and pay tribute to the country that is supporting you and allowing to reside on it's soil.

And if you don't like it, please go home. We'll be happy to help you on your way.

Imagine a World With No Religion.

For all you religious people out there, please take a second to read with your heart before you call me a heretic or say that everything on this page is blasphemy. If your religion is strong and true, you should be able to look at other evidence with an open mind. And with that, I give you an excerpt from Richard Dawkins "The God Delusion".

"In January 2006 I presented a two-part television documentry on British Television (channel 4) called the Root of All Evil? From the start I didn't like this title. Religion is not the rood of all evil, for no one thing is the root of all anything. But I was delighted with the advertisement that Channel Four put in the national newspapers. It was a picture of the Manhattan skyline with the cation 'Imagine a world without religion.' What was the connection? The twin towers of the World Trade Center were conspicuously present.

Imagine, with John Lennon, a world with no religion. All in all, wouldn't it be wonderful when you no longer had to worry about how safe it is to board a flight going to the states, or stand in the customs lines while you get searched for said flight? Wouldn't it be beautiful not to worry everytime you step onto a bus or train in London? Or go to work in New York? Or even visit Bali?

A snapshot of my recent and ongoing trip to Calgary!!

Inglewood, a quaint little district full of independent coffee shops, restaurants and shops that has a relaxing but bustling feel like the back streets of Melbourne. Too bad it doesn't have Melbourne's weather!

A shot of the small and seemingly unimposing skyline from Inglewood as the snow started to move in. None of it stuck around until after the hockey game...

This was the sight that accosted us when we emerged victorious (in shootouts for a change) after the Calgary Flames vs. St. Louis Blues. A pretty sight that will make it bitterly cold and slippery for a commute to work tomorrow. And people ask me why I want to live in a place like Australia?? Is there any question?

Discovery Channel's controversial James Cameron-produced documentary "The Lost Tomb of Jesus" drew the largest audience for the network in more than a year on Sunday night, but the network has taken several recent steps to downplay the project.

Departing from normal procedures, the cable network didn't tout its big ratings win. The network also scheduled a last-minute special that harshly criticized its own documentary, and has yanked a planned repeat of "Tomb."

"This is not one where you necessarily beat the drum, from a business perspective," said David Leavy, executive VP of corporate communications at Discovery. "It's not necessarily about making money, or making ratings, or shouting from the highest office building. Sometimes having some maturity and perspective is more important than getting picked up in all the ratings highlights."

(New York- WABC, Feb. 28, 2007) - The City Council today
approved a symbolic resolution to ban "the 'n' word" a racial slur that has a
painful history intertwined with slavery.

The non-binding measure calls for New Yorkers to
voluntarily stop using the slur against blacks, which has more recently been
adapted among entertainers and youths as a term of endearment.
Councilman
Leroy Comrie, the sponsor of the bill, says people are also denigrating
themselves by using the word, and disrespecting their history.

The effort began weeks ago at the start of Black History
Month, and has gradually gained nationwide notice and support. Other
municipalities have passed measures similar to New York City's, and a
historically black college in Alabama recently held a four-day conference to
discuss the slur.

In New York, supporters gathered at City Hall today, many
of them wearing small pins featuring a single white "N" severed by a red slash
and circle.

Back in the Frozen North

Well I am back where my life as I know it began. Although I said I never wanted to live here again, I have to admit that since I have been gone, the city has gone through a few changes. The major upside to being back has to be an awesome job, doing what I love. Helping a company and a friend with getting her online content up and rocking. The other major upside? Well I found an amazing pad, although it's an hour commute to work. I guess some people have far longer to go don't they? I don't know how they can do it.

I can say that Calgary on the whole has made a few minor improvments, while still needing a few more. I miss the standard bins from Melbourne, back here we have mismatched bags and are allowed to throw out as much as we want. When will we ever learn?

And back to old fashioned toilets and lightbulbs. The bulbs that Australia and NZ banned years ago are a common sight over here, as are water wasting toilets. I have spotted one dual flush toilet, and the old lightbulbs are slowly being phased out, so I guess I should give them a little credit eh?

And then again maybe not.

All in all, I'm not digging being back as much as I love the other side of the world. Maybe my heart will unfreeze when the weather turns good and I will see the finer side of Calgary. Until then....I'll be here freezing my butt off wishing I was back in the sunny land of Aussie....

Mile High Encounters Anyone?

What kind of world do we live in when an airline stewardess that sleeps with an actor gets front page news coverage all around the world? FORMER Qantas stewardess Lisa Robertson began her 15 minutes of fame after a mile high encounter with actor Ralph Fiennes.

She told her 60 Minutes interviewer that she would "…do it again in a heartbeat." What normal sane woman would then feel abandoned when a man she has had an affair with declined to go to her defence over her problems with Qantas.

Now, this quasi-celebrity that will most likely publish a tell all account of the encounter through a major book publisher (which will be greeted like the next War and Peace), states that through the unprotected sex with the actor, she could be pregnant.

What could seem more attention grabbing than this blatant attempt to extend her 15 minutes of fame into a long drawn out 'pregnancy' ordeal?

When people stop tuning into the shallow end of the gene pool's petty little experiences, will we find that more pressing matters are attended to?

Should we still be in Iraq? Let's discuss it after we find out if Ralph Fiennes is a daddy first shall we?

Should Qantas be taken over by an international company, while Australia loses another Airline like Ansett? Who cares as long as we know what happens to the former stewardess?

How silly must we be to let this become front-page news? Really?

Is the Current Beauty Craze a Good Thing?

Well it seems that our quest for the perfect look has come full circle with the Oscars upon us again. It's amazing to think that people will subject themselves to chemical peels that imitate second degree burns, full face lifts that can take 4-6 weeks to heal, or volumetric face lifts that will take fat out of our abdomens to allow them to use it to sculpt our facial features.

And while we all expect our celebrities to look much younger than they actually are, it makes me wonder what type of a materialistic society we are creating. When 40 year olds are trying to look 28, and 60 year olds no longer have faces that show emotion, why do we think that these are the beautiful people?

Who can afford a volumetric face-lift that has a price tag starting at just $15,000? Or who would have their teeth whitened before every event for a cool $500-$1,000? Would you subject yourself to a needle in the stomach to take four years off your look?

Anyone can see why non-intrusive cosmetic surgery has started to become a popular favourite. When once tell tale bruises and swelling would alert others to our egocentric self absorbed feel towards ourselves, now there are quick nips and tucks that leave everyone guessing.

One can only wonder how many of us are actually going to be real when we are lowered into the ground when 11.9 million surgeries were performed in the US alone during 2004. When we are subjecting ourselves to surgeries that are in essence vanity surgeries that help us look younger, the overall effect on our society is a given.

From tummy tucks, nose jobs, breast implants and augmentations, face lifts, facial fillers, buttock implants, ear jobs and chemical peels, haven't we surpassed the quest for the perfect look and entered the realm of the obsessed?

If we take the well-documented case of Michael Jackson, we can see how disorders that permeate from the desire to constantly change ones looks can ultimately cause great distress. And in more recent times, it is suspected the Anna Nicole Smith could have died as a result of a botched cosmetic surgery. Body Dysmorphic Disorder is the name given to this condition that results from a mental disorder that involves a disturbed body image.

Conservative estimates put approximately 50% of South Korean women in their 20's have had some form of cosmetic surgery. And while the religion of Indian women states that they are unable to have any cosmetic surgery that involves non-kosher products (many botox and fillers are 'harvested' from cattle) has now sparked an industry located outside of India that caters to Indian women and kosher products.

The globe is currently in the grips of a beauty craze and only time will tell how far we will go to fulfil it.

Schapelle Corby Again?

"When I flew to Bali on 8 October 2004, I imagined my biggest problem was going to be deciding which sarong to wear with which bikini... " starts the synopsis of Scapelle Corby's new book regarding her time in Bali prisons after she was convicted of smuggling 4.2kg of marijuana into Bali. For those that don't know, or haven't heard the heart-wrenching story of Schapelle, it started on October 8, 2004 when she was arrested in the Denpassar airport after 4.2kg of marijuana was found in her boogie board bag.

Indonesian customs agents at Ngurah Rai Airport seized Schapelle on her arrival in Bali, Indonesia on October 8, 2004. She has since been charged with smuggling on May 25, 2005 and has been imprisoned for 20 years. Corby has had her sentence cut two months short for the Indonesia independence Day and for Christmas 2006, Corby has been granted a one month reduction in her sentence due to her good behaviour.

Mercedes', Schapelle's sister has stated emphatically that " My sister remains a prisoner of Indonesia. Please do not forget her as she struggles to endure this nightmare!" Personally if I was caught smuggling marijuana into Bali, I highly doubt that after over two years, my hair would still look like I was a trainee beauty technician.

After campaigning about the horrific living conditions that exist in Bali prisons, it also brings to mind our prisons. Should our prison system be a relaxing retreat from our real lives, as the Corby's tend to think it is? Unfortunately, Schapelle was not caught in Australia and this being the case, she does not benefit from Australia's strict adherence to the Declaration of Human Rights that states every inmate should get a private room. Or that every inmate should receive a menu to choose from, free access to university courses (with the opportunity to receive a degree) and paid employment.

With her family connections to cannabis, one wonders whether she has had the unfortunate timing to have her body board bag used as a transportation device for marijuana, or whether she was unlucky to be born to a family with a long history of drug indiscretions. Her father has one conviction on the possession of cannabis as well as living next door to a another man with possession charges on numerous occasions, while her brother, James Krisina, stood trial in Brisbane for drug possession and assault charges the same day Schapelle has her charges were reinstated.

After a soap opera of drama including flying John Patrick Ford, a prisoner at Port Phillip Prison, who was awaiting trial and was subsequently convicted on charges of rape, to Indonesia to give evidence in Corby's defence, implied bribe attempts and now, Jodi Power's damning evidence regarding Mercedes' drug habits, it all seems to be too far fetched to believe.

Now, a move for Schapelle to the women's only prison at Malang in East Java, three hours away from the closest international airport, is hinging on the outcome of her final appeal. Instead of having her human rights respected with a private cell and easy access by all her supporters bringing food and luxuries that allow her to keep her complexion, Schapelle would be sharing a cell with three to seven other inmates and be woken at 5am for prayers as well as an hour of exercise.

Personally, this should stand as a warning for others headed to places like Indonesia and Singapore. Don't carry drugs, whether it is strapped to your body or stowed in a body board bag. And for God's sake, don't become a drama queen out of the whole ordeal as there are more pressing issues for the public to be concerned with.

I find it amazing that as America is losing it's grip as the superpower in innovation and invention, all American's can find it in their hearts to do is immerse themselves in reality TV shows and attempts to eat as much as humanly possible, while avoiding gaining any weight. And instead of enriching our minds with the classic books that have shaped more than one generation that has come before us, we cruise the internet reading blogs about what sexual exploits people have had, and dogs that wish to meet the first dog.

Can we really state that we are oblivious to the fact that our world has gone to the dogs?

Misguided Gods

Why do I want to go to heaven with a God that forgives murderers, thieves, rapists and the like, when he doesn’t forgive people who commit suicide? People that are lost enough to take their own life as they believe there is nothing left for them on this earth. They need the guidance of God more than anyone else in my opinion. I know that they have committed the ultimate sin in regards to taking the life that God has given them.

How can these lost souls remain unforgiven when a murderer that has taken countless lives away from living the lives that they were supposed to says he was sorry and is granted access into heaven. We should know from our own trials and tribulations that trying to rehabilitate this criminals is a lifelong exercise that truly gets us nowhere. They know how to play the system, to confess, say they are sorry, get a slap on the wrist just to be released to join society and do it all over again. What can happen in heaven that is so different, that they will change the moment they walk through those pearly gates? A God that is there for everyone would not forbid those that need him most.

And in saying that, I pose the question to you. Do you want to go to a heaven with a god that forgives the murderer of your child, your mother, your father, your lover, but not you when you take your own life due to the loss of your loved one?

Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

I am looking at life in a different light now it seems. After travelling the world for four years off and on, it's time to head home to sort out a few issues that I once ran away from. Running is always an easier solution at the beginning, but yet leaves many what ifs and untied loose ends lying around. Having an unended past always makes an unknown future that much harder to face.

No matter where you go in the world, it always seems that those problems that you ran so far away from, are still just around the corner, ready to pounce when you feel most secure. Whether it's family related, which most of us have more than a little family orientated baggage, or other, it all adds to the load we carry with us.

Family baggage may make it hard to trust or belong, where other baggage, like mine makes it hard to remember what life was like before my soulmate came into my life. A perfect stitch in time that was cut short before it's time. Someone who understood me perfectly, nurtured my dreams and kept my demons in check. A stolen moment that makes it harder to give in, to open up and let others in because they will leave too. Whatever you love, you lose, or so it seems.

But a homecoming, whether welcome or not can be a blessing. A chance to start fresh, to put away old grudges, let old grievances go and move on. An opportunity to make good memories where old memories reside. A second chance to fix what went wrong the last time.

And while these second chances are never quite the same the second time round, they give us the momentum that we need to move on, away from the bad and into the unknown, for better or worse, til death do us part.

Avondale Heights author Linsay Seitz finds it an honor to be called "bitter and resentful".

She said her first book, Politically Incorrect and Brutally Honest [Reflections], recently launched at Flemington's Verb Café, perfectly summed up her philosophy.

A self-confessed Canadian pot-stirrer, Seitz said she was on a campaign against political correctness. "When (George W.) Bush won a second term, all the Americans came across the border and I figured it was my turn to leave," she said.

She said she refused to sit on the fence and had been called bitter and resentful for her outspoken views.

"That's a beautiful response, because you have hit a nerve with someone," she said. "I have always been the black sheep. At school I would say the things that needed to be said - or the things most of us only think about."

Seitz is prepared to discuss any controversial topic - from the rights of minorities to discrimination.

"Canada actually now has Caucasians as a minority group. Attending a multicultural school was a major eye-opener," Seitz says in her book.

"Students taunted teachers with 'you just failed me because I am black' as well as other harsh allegations that became commonplace."

She said a prime example was Christmas, believed by some non-Christians to be offensive.

"How can anyone take offense at 'Merry Christmas'?" she asked. "They are so ready to call out discrimination and say you have offended them."

She applauded films like Borat, which pushed the boundries of political correctness.

"I feel that as our society goes more politically correct, ones like Borat and myself tend to go more politically incorrect to try to balance it out and shed light on it," Seitz said. "The major thing I am trying to teach is tolerance."

A Fire in Her Belly

Linsay Seitz is an enigmatic lady. At 26 [actually 24] - an age in when most people are just adjusting to adulthood, she has a fire in her belly about society's eroding moral fibre that a Grey Power member would be proud of.

Her first book - a collation of her internet musings - is a gallant effort for someone her age, although it is not an easy [book to] read.

She visited Gisborne late last year. She was an engaging person to interview, but her book was difficult to review kindly. Normally under these circumstances we would not do a review but her publisher sent a series of e-mails and finally complained to the press council.

Speaking with Seitz, though, it is interesting to wonder where all her bile and singularity might take her. She is articulate and has a steady stare reminiscent of Ayn Rand, who developed the philosophical school of thought "objectivism". Rand also wrote several philosophical novels advancing her theories. She was a determined advocate of reason, the free market, and the freedom to pursue happiness. There is some of Rand's obsessive singularity about Seitz, if not yet her substance.

There is a similarity also with Rand in terms of early experiences providing a filter through which the world is seen. Rand's were a childhood spent in Russia under the Bolsheviks, Seitz's were a childhood spent bullied by the in-crowd, misunderstood by her father and guilt-tripped by Catholicism.

Seitz's views on immigrants, morality and the church will find a ready audience, but that doesn't make them right. Many of them might be described as redneck and simplistic.

In a world where everything that is sold to youth seems to be tied to sexual imagery it will be interesting to see what Ms Seitz does next. A lot of what she says has an element of truth to it.

During this coming age of Globilization and all those that will come after, we must begin to ask ourselves the questions that will shape our future. Will we continue to grow our companies using theories of oursourcing that involve empowering nations like India and China, or will we start building our own infastructure once again.

It is a known fact that western cultures have become complacent, assuming that they should be paid large sums of money for their knowledge. But with the opportunity to receive an education becoming commonplace the world over, we need to start realizing the importance of regaining our work ethic.

In a competitive climate that sees Indian workers going to school all day to receive their MBA's (some eighty five thousand a year) and working at night doing the jobs that western cultures deem to be beneath them, they are gaining the upper hand. From outgoing calls regarding insurance, credit cards and home loans, to incoming calls handling our computer problems, directory assistance or even reservation queries, we are at their mercy.

They are learning from the western cultures while they work for us, but soon as Thomas Friedman states in his book, The World is Flat, they will create their own businesses to challenge ours. Where will we be when their workers who are working for us are now creating our competition?

When I got back to Michigan last month I had a bunch of Canadian dollars I needed to exchange, so I went to the currency exchange window at the local bank. Short line.

Just one guy in front of me; an Asian guy who was trying to exchange yen for dollars and he was a little irritated!

He asked the teller, "Why it change?? Yesterday, I get two huna dolla fo yen. Today I get huna eighty?? Why it change?"

The teller shrugged her shoulders and said, "Fluctuations".

This January Simon Fraser University (SFU)(Burnaby British Columbia, Canada) ruled in favour of replacing the two crosses which adorn the school's crest with new symbols. What might you ask be the replacement? Books. Pardon me while I yawn. The new crest, which SFU plans to integrate within the coming months, will now have three open books across the top of the crest, symbolizing the three SFU campuses in the lower mainland, in Burnaby, Vancouver and Surrey.

The crosses were originally placed on the coat of arms to represent Simon Fraser's wife's Scottish clan, the McDonnell Clan, as well as the Fraser clan. Now call me crazy, that's history. That's a legacy. There's a story and a purpose and a link to those crosses and what they represent. And they're going to be replaced by books? Really?!?! I see a few problems with this whole idea.

However SFU Vice President of University Relation Warren Gill said that the call to eliminate the crosses came not from anti-religious "table bashing," but from a steady and innocent stream of questions asking, "Are these the appropriate symbols for a secular public university?" Firstly, I highly doubt that educated people were innocently questioning these symbols since scientific and educated minds have for centuries been bashing religious influence in secular affairs.

On the contrary, the church has been a huge supporter of education, and many people have received their education from such institutions. To quote The Peak, SFU's weekly student newspaper, business administration professor Gary Mauser, believes the change is a slight against tradition. He told the Vancouver Province over the break that "[t]o modernize it in the way they suggest is to lose our heritage."

Also, pointing out the role Christianity has played in the development of Canada's education system, he stated, "Christian influences were the shaping influences for most of Western culture, I don't see why we want to dispense with these important shaping influences, which are good. And they are good for atheists, Jews, Muslims, everyone."

In my humble opinion I do believe that these are appropriate symbols for Simon Fraser University. And clearly so did Lord Lyon King. The Celtic crosses were a design choice by Lord Lyon King, the man who bestowed the crest upon SFU. Now if that's not a slap in the face, I'm not sure what is. What's worse is the university's blatant disregard for cultural and heritage ties, since the coat of arms was created for the University in 1965 (when the school first opened), and the symbols recall the heritage and the namesake of the university. Hell if we're getting rid of the symbols which represent the namesake of this institution let's change the name to "that institution which has no religious affiliation but really really likes books".

McGill University (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) has two crowns on its coat of arms. Canada is no longer ruled by a monarchy, but do you think that an 185 year old world renowned institution is going to eliminate their heritage. Not likely. SFU Vice President of University Relation Warren Gill also stated that interested parties researching SFU internationally have, because of the crosses and the fact that the school is named after a person, mistaken the institution for a religious one. OK, well in that instance it's not the University's fault. It is in this action of accommodating the lowest common denominator, the people on the planet who are retarded enough to assume that SFU is a religious institution, that we see how far political correctness has infiltrated our systems.

To really add insult to injury even Simon Fraser University chancellor Brandt C. Louie is opposed to taking two small crosses off of the university's coat-of-arms. Thusly both the old and the new coat of arms will be officially registered coat of arms for the university but that only the chancellor of the university will use the old crest.

As for myself, I'm appalled at the entire situation. If this is a sign of things to come we will no longer have the Globe Theatre, we will no longer refer to infamous paintings by the last names of their creator, nor will we have a Stanley Cup, he was Lord Stanley, y'know. The more we allow the pressure of this unspoken majority/society who claims to be making advances and changes for the future, in reality they are destroying our past, our culture and our heritage. I would suggest reading Romeo and Juliet one last time, you never know when it will be banned because there's religion in it.

There has been a monthly average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq theatre of operations during the last 22 months, and a total of 2,112 deaths. That gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers.

The firearm death rate in Washington, DC is 80.6 per 100,000 persons for the same period. That means that you are about 25% more likely to be shot and killed in the U.S. Capital than you are in Iraq.

Muslim Only Toilets?

Throughout the past year, the Australians patience has been tried. From Sheikh's claiming that females that don't cover all their skin are asking to be raped and are the equivalent of uncovered meat and that they have more rights to be here than Australians themselves do because the Muslims have "paid for their tickets", it is understandable.

Religious tensions have always criss-crossed interactions, and from Cronulla to the support of Muslim rapists, it's not going to get any easier.

After all the unease that has been voiced about Muslims not integrating into Australian society, the latest news might explain why.

At La Trobe University in Melbourne, a student who did not want to be named has come to the
press to inform us that "Muslim Only" toilets have been installed that are secured with a touch pad password lock.

Instead of bringing two races together in the common pursuit of education, we are allowing divisions to enforce the feelings of intolerance that have plagued this nation.

Why? Because of specific prayer practices that see Muslims washing their feet before they pray. So instead of putting "foot sinks" in the public toilets, we give them their own private ones? How can anyone look at this situation and not shake their heads in disgust?

In the USA, Rosa Parks fought for the opportunity to ride the buses with the "white Caucasians". Are Australians allowing those same divisions to populate their country 52 years later?

But the question remains of whether the Australian government will stand by its claims of teaching new immigrants to embrace the Australian culture, or whether the minority groups will continue to dictate the terms of engagement until the "fair dinkum" Aussies step in?

It has been said many times before and I fear many times again until we finally understand and learn the full importance of what is being said.

We need to learn tolerance.

Tolerance for others. For their customs, for their beliefs and for their religion. It is not anyone's place to attempt to change someone's culture in any way shape of form. By the same token, if you move to a new society, you have to integrate and become a positive infulence into the new culture that you have joined. Not assimilate and lose your own identity. But become an addition to that culture.

Learn the language so you can converse with others. Converse with others so they know about you and won't be afraid of you as fear is a major factor in violence. Become a part of the society. Join in and rejoice that people were tolerent enough to welcome you into their lives.

And from the other side, go easy on the new additions to the society. We all need some time to find our way and find our courage to join in something unknown and new. Help the newbies find something to add and as always, be tolerant.

The only way that we are going to be able to live with each other is by knowing that we all are different and we always will be. Trying to be PC annoys people because they aren't seen as being special.

Everyone is racist in one way or another, some just deal with it better. No one person or group of people is to blame for racism and it's ugly results but we are all to blame for allowing ourselves to add to the problems.

Step above your own personal issues and do something for someone else for a change. Make a difference.

I find it amusing that a man that was in his element over 100 years ago so aptly caught the meaning behind fashion. Is it so hard to imagine that things that were in during the eighties, that our parents said they would never wear again, are now the craze amongst the youngsters of today?

Why is it that once a celebrity wears something, it gains it's credibility, but once the general public wears it, it loses all it's appeal?

And why must we see fashion on models that have no body, no curves and no sex appeal whatsoever, so that when the clothes become available to us, they don't look even remotely like what they did on the models?

Australian Flag Banned In Australia?

What kind of sick joke is this??

What can be considered more intolerent than not allowing Australians in Australia to show their national pride with the Australian flag? Mr. West, the Event Organizer for both the Big Day Out and the Australian Open has stated that "the Australian flag was being used as gang colours. It was racism disguised as patriotism and I'm not going to tolerate it."

Australians are not going to tolerate being told that any Australian flag that they bring to this concert in Sydney, The Big Day Out, will have any thing that holds the Australian colors confiscated. From bandanas to flags, shirts to bags, it all has to go.

I agree with Mr. Iemma, the NSW premier when he states that the concert should be boycotted, not the flag.

My question is:

In the day and age of needing to be more tolerant to people of different beliefs and values, if we can not show the colors of our country with the national flag, what is going to give everyone the sense of belonging? How do we belong when we are considered racist for holding our heads up high and when displaying our national colors, whether it be a flag, a bandana or just in our hearts?

Why is it that the only thing that humans can not seem to agree on is religion. Over the years we have all agreed at one time or another over everything else but one cause has not seen as much bloodshed over it than religion has. Leaders preach that anyone not following their religion is in the wrong, but all religious leaders are supposedly all forgiving beings.

Catholics have killed and maimed in their attempts to convert people for hundreds, if not thousands of years. And now I would have to assume from current teachings made public, that it is the Muslim's turn. First it was Sheikh Hilaly. Now it is Sheikh Feiz Mohammed.

Mohammed has published a set of DVD's available over the internet for $150 that claims "We want to have children and offer them as soldiers defending Islam.

"Teach them this: There is nothing more beloved to me than wanting to die as a mujahid (holy warrior).

"Put in their soft, tender hearts the zeal of jihad and a love of martyrdom."

He ridicules Jews as pigs, making snorting sounds and all.

Then he calls for the destruction, or killing of all "kaffirs" or non-muslims.

The most ironic thing about this all, is that he has been born an Australian. He has been born in Sydney and grew up there. Now he is calling for the deaths of all those people he grew up against. All the Muslims that do not go to lectures like his.

And just think, he is the leader of the Global Islamic Youth Centre in Liverpool, teaching over 4,000 students in person while selling his DVD's in Australia and overseas.

Is religion really worth all the pain, suffering and dying?

Two Steps Backwards...

It seems that this life has more than a few of Murphy's Laws in mind when it guides us along our paths. From what we think we will never to do becoming a part of our memories, to places that we never wanted to go back to becoming a part of our future.

It's hard to believe that sometimes we have to take two steps back and visit our past in order for us to take one step forward and begin a new journey.

I was always the one that never wanted to go back to the place that I'm from. It's not because of family or bad memories, but because I never felt that that is where my future begins. As time passes though, it becomes more apparent that the past still has a hold on my future and I must humbly accept the fact that I have to visit that which I never wanted to, in order to accomplish what I always dreamed of.

Maybe our past really is found in our future. Or is that our past is found in our future?

Religious Leaders Inspiring Hostilities

Sydney Muslim leader Sheik Taj el-Din al Hilaly must go. From stating that females who do not cover up are asking to be raped and comparing them to cat food, his time has come and past. After his last outburst that was put off to being a mis-interpretation of the language that he 'doesn't speak well', he has brought even more disgrace to Australian Muslims. Australian Muslims who will now be targeted as 'repayment' of his crude remarks.

Do I agree that this should happen? No. I believe that our leaders, political, social and religious are entrusted with the task of teaching of teaching everyone the lesson of tolerance. We will never be the same; we will never end these differences that make our world unique and intriguing. We must stop trying to exterminate anything that is different from what we know and understand.

The Catholic Church has been guilty of this for many hundreds of years. From aboriginal peoples that have been taken to the brink of extinction, to those that are no longer among us, we have to learn from our mistakes. Learn from the world that is causing the extinction of 4 species of plants and animals a month due to our insatiable greed. Learn from those that have gone before, what we need to avoid. For the lesson will be repeated until learned.

The sheik has now stated on Egyptian TV that he meant everything that he said. And to rub salt in the wounds that he himself inflicted less than six months ago, he is now claiming that Muslims have more claim to Australia than the convicts that originally came here.

How can we expect to live in peace and harmony when our religious leaders are crying discrimination. When they are planting the seeds of discontent and anger against others?

Religion is based upon a deity's rules to live. And in every religion that I have studied, Islamic, Buddhism, Christianity, and others, the main message that is preached is tolerance, forgiveness and 'do unto others as you would have them do unto you'.

My question is why religious leaders are the first to kill in the name of their God? The first to condemn in the name of their God? I can honestly say that no war is holy in the eyes of a God and I am not even religious. So why can't the religious see that?

Blood Diamonds

It's amazing how long we, as the human race, have been killing for what we want. And who ever said that what you don't know, won't kill you was completely off the mark.

The newest addition to my knowledge of these events is what has been coined the 'blood diamonds' or 'conflict diamonds'. Throughout the nineties and the early 2000's, the diamond fields of Sierre Leone were fought over by the government and the rebel forces, for whoever controlled the mines, controlled the flow of cash into the country. Boys were stolen from families to become revolutionaries, females were raped and murdered and the caucasians and the blacks that once fought together for another commoditity were now fighting each other.

Apartheid ended and the massacres began.

And for what? So that us here in nice comfortable homes in peaceful countries could have diamonds at affordable prices. Females could have the diamond ring on their finger for a fraction of the cost because people had paid for them in blood. People had died from them.

But then as long as we don't know them, we can maintain our ignorance to the atrocities that are committed. We can brush away the fact that we are funding a war. That we are killing a race and all for a status symbol.

As I walked along the Maribronoyng River today in my normal lap, I got to wondering why as a race, we always allow the weaker of us to be directed by the stranger. If you look at pure size of each group, the weaker groups far outnumbers the stronger and hence is stronger. But we allow the stronger to manipulate us. To keep us from banding together and telling them to go to hell.

In Australia, this has most recently been shown in the water restrictions that have been imposed on Victoria which has been in a state of Drought for five years. They have residential owners in a 'Stage 3' soon to be 'Stage 4' restrictions, while there is nothing being done to curb big businesses use of water. Or even the state Governments usage!! The state Government water usage went up by 25% as they are threatening to cut off usage to any private user who doesn't reduce. What hypocrite's!!

When the United States wanted to declare war on Iraq for weapons of mass destruction, they went to the UN. The UN disagreed. The US went and invaded anyways, playing the big bully that they always do and expecting support when everything went to hell. What did countries like Canada, Britain and Australia do??? We helped them out, when we should have banded together and stopped the killing. History repeats itself.

Why can we only band together for a short period of time to defeat an army too powerful to defeat by ourselves? The US and the USSR banded together to defeat the Nazi's, then they entered into the Cold War. It has happened time and time again in history, while we never learn, never change and never evolve.

How long until history stops repeating itself because we have actually learned from our mistakes??

Or will the lesson be repeated until learned?

Something That Needs To Be Said

I went on this interview with the guy from gisborne. The one that wanted me to audition for a review in his dinky little paper. While fast forward to almost a month and a half later, and there is still no review. No response. I emailed the executive director of the newspaper, and got the editor. The reporter's friend. Wouldn't you know it, they told my agent that I was 'articulate and engaging' (code word for above my head, below my knees and wouldn't sleep with me) but yet that the reporter couldn't write the article and do my book justice because it was 'bitter and resentful'. I wonder what the hell a 24 year old would have to be bitter and resentful about in today's wonderful world. I speak my mind, put it out there for all to see and all I get are friends that won't tell me the truth because they are afraid to hurt my feelings and complete strangers (all guys by the way) that don't want to tell me what they think because I'm bitter and resentful. What the hell do I have to be bitter and resentful about?? The fact that I was supposed to go out with a guy, but after he googled me and read my website, he discovered that I must be completely different to the person he's already talked to and doesn't want to see me. Ever. Again. Well thank you very much you asshole!! Sorry, but what the hell is so bad on my website???

The point that I'm trying to get across is that they are your emotions, the inner workings of your mind and through all of my twisted and sordid experiences, I have realized one little truth. That you have to let it go. Don't censor yourself due to what you think others might consider too bitchy, too opinionated or too intelligent for the overall population to get. All great minds have encountered opposition from mediocre minds and you will on your travels as well. The thing that I know and am currently working on mastering is that you have to let all the bad go. Keep the good and let the bad slip from your mind. Feed on what makes you feel good and forget about all the insignificant little people in your life, that might cross your path, or who have already left. Do what you want for you, and no one else.

And if all else fails, feel free to feel bitchy every once and awhile. People might not like it, but they will respect you for it. (If they aren't scared shitless by a woman that has no qualms about saying what's on her mind.)

The Problem With People

I must admit, I opened up today's paper here in Melbourne Australia and truly laughed. Now seeing as someone had died, I'm not saying that this was a good thing, or something to be proud of but when you look at the whole picture, you have to wonder what the hell people are thinking.

An African woman who apparantly doesn't know that you press the brake down when you jump a curb, was reversing out of a parking stall and ended up reversing straight through the side walk cafe and through the window of the same cafe. The first thing that this should bring us to question is our state of licensing. If the woman (african or not) had actually been tested properly, would she have jumped a curb, ran through a cafe and smashed into the window? No, she would have hit the brakes.

Now the other side is that in her panic, she ran over an Australian man of Asian descent. Not an Asian man, but an Australian. Everyone should be feeling the anguish over the fact that they witnessed a human life being extinguished. But instead, one witness said that she 'aimed' specifically for the Asian man. Do you really think that any of us are skilled enough drivers these days to reverse from a parking spot and hit only one person in a crowded cafe? The person we want to? Not a chance honey.

So because one person felt discriminated against, or unfairly targeted, a whole suburb of Melbourne turned into a war zone with people from similar ethnic backgrounds banding together against those of other ethnic backgrounds.

Maybe we need to see it as a time for us all to band together to support each other, rather than attacking each other?? But then I guess that this is asking too much, right?

From the bedroom to the Front Page

I have to admit that this has got to take the cake. Our lives used to be sacred. Our morals used to be worth something. But in this modern day world of women being promiscuous and being 'allowed' to enjoy their sexuality with as many men as they choose, it's getting a little overdone.

Take one Jessica Cutler. Used to work in American politics. Used to screw six different men all at the same time to add to her meagre $25K salary. As she said, 'who can live on $25K?' I hate to relate this well known information on to her, but many Americans do. They don't stoop to levels of blackmail and prostitution to help them make more money. They don't create a blog online to promote their endeavours and create an online tell tale of it all.

A blog that she penned anonymously was only up for a month before she was found out. What happened in her life after that would have left women of the past shaking in their boots, but a new age woman? She was given an advance of $350,000 to pen a book based loosely on her 'experiences' in politics. She posed nude for Playboy and has since become the poster girl of political scandal. And loves every minute of it.

As it states on her website, "I am a published author who jumps out of cakes for money". Is that really something to write for everyone to see? Do you really want to be seen as The Washington Magazine Post states, "For better or for worse, she is our blogger slut"?

But then what is our world coming to? It is filled with women who are ready to drop their knickers for anyone who is anyone and might possibly give them their 15 minutes of fame. They will drop their knickers for Shayne Warne. Monica Lewinsky had an affair with the American president Bill Clinton. Many other women are coming out of the woodwork claiming to have been victimized by these men that have power and prestige.

The truth is that these women are no better than bottom feeding whores. They will do anything, including airing their dirty laundry to get ahead in the world. They will go to bed and sleep well, knowing that the world knows their name, not for an achievement but for a scandal. In our modern day world, scandals are the new achievement, meant for only the confident sluts who really dare to 'air all their dirty laundry'.

My question is when will it stop? When will we realize that this is undermining everything that our society is supposed to stand for? When will we realize that who slept with who sells more magazines than bodies lying in the street, covered in blood, caused by our own governments?

As long as we have 'sluts' populating our world that get our full hearted support, we never will.

The Start Of A Journey

I begin here, with hope in my heart that the world has yet to fall into the PC trap that certain groups in the world are setting for us. It seems that where ever we turn these days, someone is crying out the word 'discrimination', and wanting us to change. There is to be no discussion about us, or our way of life. It is all about them.

They feel that they are being treated unfairly. They feel that they are being picked on. And the worst people to cry discrimination are those that claim that they are protection people's rights. That they are fighting for equality. They must not have read the american constitution, or any other constitution for that matter as we all have the right to free speech. Nowhere is it stated that we are entitled to immigrate to a country then try to change their way of life, but free speech is protected.

But our rights are slowly being eaten away as we stride quite quickly towards this police state that reminds me of 1984.

We need to remember that "we can please some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time".

Only when we realize that our way of life is slowly being eroded by people run only by their delicate little feelings, will we see what we have lost. Once our freedom has been lost, it will take much more to gain it back. We only need to remember the amount of lives that have been lost in the fight for freedom, to realize what we are at risk of losing.
